                                Author Research Assignment
This assignment, in conjunction with an assignment next quarter, provides you an opportunity to learn about an author of your choosing and his or her writing and importance.  Once you have selected an author and have had your choice approved, you will not be allowed to change your selection, even for the second assignment next quarter.  Therefore, it is imperative you choose wisely.

When choosing an author, the list of
authors and works given to you provides a starting point from which to begin, as do your notes on literary periods from the first quarter and class discussions.  You are not limited to the authors discussed in these materials; however, you should do some preliminary research, even if you have a particular author in mind, prior to making your selection.  First, you should check the availability of appropriate biographical and critical material related to an author in order to complete this assignment.  It would also be wise to preview some of the author’s works for topics, style, and diction to be confident you will be able to read one of his or her works effectively next quarter.

The first step in this process is to select an author.  All selections must be approved by me.  Only one student per class will be allowed to research an individual author, so it is wise to have alternatives as well.
The earliest date you may make your selection is 1/13.
You must make your selection no later than 1/18.
If you have not chosen and been approved by that date, I will select an author for you.

You will make a PowerPoint presentation to the class on your author.  You will have a specific date reserved for your presentation, which must include these elements:
                                • Be between 3-5 minutes in length.
                                • Visually enhances the presentation of information.
                                • Contain important biographical information regarding the author’s life.
                                • Describe the historical period and how it is related or reflected in the author’s work.
                                • Summarize the critical appraisal of the author’s work.
                                • Document at least two research appropriate sources using MLA documentation form.  These sources must have authors.  (Inappropriate sources include, but are not limited to, all encyclopedias, Wikipedia, and non-scholarly criticism, such as Cliff Notes, Spark Notes, Book Rags, etc.  If you have a question about a source’s appropriateness, check with me.)
