English I (Honors) Course Description
Reading
¨ Novels: My Antonia (Willa Cather), The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexander Dumas), A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens), The Odyssey (Homer), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson), A Turn of the Screw (Henry James).
¨ Plays: The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet (William Shakespeare).
¨ Poetry: selected works reflecting diverse poetic styles and techniques.
¨ Short stories: selected works by world-renowned authors.
¨ One student selected (teacher approved) novel from a list of literary authors.
¨ Analyze elements of literature (e.g. symbolism, plot, conflict, etc.).
Writing
¨ Write a variety of sentence structures accurately.
¨ Write well-developed, focused paragraphs.
¨ Write multi-paragraph essays, including a research project on an author.
¨ Reinforce vocabulary, proper mechanics, and usage through written assignments.
Critical Thinking
¨ Use higher order thinking skills to process and synthesize information.
¨ Be challenged to form opinions and support assertions with logical explanations both orally and in writing.
Grammar and Vocabulary Building
¨ Learn and apply various sentence structures.
¨ Use conventions of the English language accurately.
¨ Increase vocabulary through exposure to words in literary context.
¨ Use word-attack skills, such as context clues, roots, derivations, and inflections.
Study Skills
¨ Organize time by managing a variety of assignments simultaneously.
¨ Be held accountable for commitments and deadlines.
¨ Learn a variety of note-taking, organizational, and test-taking strategies.
¨ Know and use library resources to access information and synthesize that information.
Speaking/Listening
¨ Listen effectively in a variety of situations (e.g. lecture, directions, and small group and class discussions).
¨ Present to the class various oral assignments and reports.
