English II Course Description:
English II is a course that further develops the skills taught in English I in connection with literature and writing. The main grammar text is Grammar and Composition Handbook.
Reading
¨ Novels: Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Pearl.
¨ Plays: Macbeth, Twelve Angry Men.
¨ Poetry: selected works reflecting diverse poetic styles and techniques.
¨ Short stories: selected works by world-renowned authors.
¨ One student selected (teacher approved) novel/biography per quarter.
¨ Analyze elements of literature (e.g. symbolism, plot, conflict, etc.).
Writing
¨ Write a variety of sentence structures accurately.
¨ Write well-developed, focused paragraphs.
¨ Write multi-paragraph essays including a personal reminiscence with
descriptive narrative, definition, cause and effect, comparison/contrast,
persuasive, process, and research paper.
¨ Reinforce vocabulary, proper mechanics, and usage through written
assignments.
Critical Thinking
¨ Use higher order thinking skills to process and synthesize information.
¨ Be challenged to form opinions and support assertions with logical
explanations both orally and in writing.
Grammar and Vocabulary Building
¨ Use conventions of the English language accurately.
¨ Increase vocabulary through exposure to words in literary context.
¨ Learn word-attack skills, such as context clues, roots, derivations, and
inflections.
Study Skills
¨ Organize time by managing a variety of assignments simultaneously.
¨ Be held accountable for commitments and deadlines.
¨ Learn a variety of note-taking, organizational, and test-taking strategies.
¨ Know and use library resources to access information and synthesize that
information.
