                                allege
                                  v.  To assert (or state) to be true without proof

                                condescend  v.  Assume an air of superiority; exhibit a patronizing attitude / prefix ‘con’ = with, link to idea of descend – go down,  with looking down (on someone)

                                contemptuous  adj.  Scornful  / n. is contempt   ‘uous’ is adj suffix

                                foray  n.  A sudden raid; a first attempt   / v. form is same word

                                illicit  adj.  Unlawful  / prefix ‘il’ means not   not legal

                                indigenous  adj.  Native to a particular region or species

                                macabre  adj.  Having death as a subject; dwelling on the gruesome / French – dance of death

                                taciturn  adj.  Habitually  not talkative  or silent    / linked to tacit, understood without saying

                                vexation  n.  An irritation or annoyance/ ‘ion’ is n. suffix, links to verb vex

                                vapid  adj.  without spirit; flat, dull   / can link to vapor
