English II – Vocabulary Requirements
There will be a total of 100 vocabulary words for the school year: fifty in each semester.
Each new vocabulary list of ten words will first be presented in sentences from which students will attempt to define their meanings from context (10 pts). Students will then have the opportunity to take down the correct definitions (10 pts). Students will have a homework assignment to use the words correctly in their writing (100 pts). That assignment will be scored as follows:
90 – 100 All ten words are used correctly in a unified, coherent paragraph with
few (if any) grammatical and/or mechanical errors. The paragraph is typed,
double-spaced.
80 – 89 All ten words are used mostly correctly in a paragraph that may have
structural errors and some grammatical and/or mechanical errors. The
paragraph is typed.
70 – 79 All ten words are used, although many incorrectly, in a paragraph that
may have structural errors and many grammatical and/or mechanical errors,
OR each word is used correctly in individual sentences that are not
organized into a paragraph but are mostly free of grammatical and/or
mechanical errors. The assignment is handwritten, double-spaced.
60 – 69 Each word is attempted to be used correctly in individual sentences
that are not organized into a paragraph but have grammatical and/or
mechanical errors. The paragraph is handwritten.
Below 60 Words are missing from the sentences or not used correctly.
0 Student chooses not to do the assignment, or the assignment is done in
pencil.
Finally, there will be an objective quiz matching the words to their correct definitions (100 pts). These quizzes will be cumulative; students are responsible for not only the new list of words, but all previous lists of words as well.
There may also be additional writing assignments requiring the vocabulary words to be used.
